Relaxed Evening

May 1, 2007

Hey, Bullet, I said. How about we call the big sister and maybe make a bit of a barbecue?

Sure, grunted Bullet.

So I called Grown-up Daughter. I was thinking of maybe having a bit of a barbecue. What do you think?

Sounds good. But I’ll have to fuck off straight away.

GrownupDaughter is studying some shit, and anyway daughters are a pain in the arse, so I said Fine.

I lit up the barbie and made a pile of things that go with barbies. I opened up a bottle of wine for me, but not for Bullet cos he’s too young. GrownupDaughter is far from too young. GrownupDaughter would drink you (and me} under the table but luckily GrownupDaughter has the car outside and therefore can’t drink. How things have changed. Would a pile of drink in my belly have stopped me driving when I was GrownupDaughter’s age?

[Answer: No]

We had a nice dinner. GrownupDaughter fucked off and Bullet wandered off to tickle away at his electric guitar plus small practice amp. Nice. I lit a fire outside and put on a CD.

Come on, I said to Bullet. We’ll listen to a few songs outside.

OK, agreed Bullet.

So we sat back, in the glow of the fire, and these are the things we listened to:

Neil Young, Freedom
Guy Clark, Old No 1
Tom Russell, The Long Way Around

How bad?

You sit out the back with your son, in the dark, with the fire glowing, listening to music and it’s good for you and it works for him.

How bad is that?

BBQ’s and Neil Young, sounds like a match made in heaven!!

Your poor grown-up daughter, I feel her pain, having to leave BBQ’s early because of studying “some shit” just remember that it’s the money from that “some shit” that will pay for your nursing home ;-)

Well, that’s what I tell my dad anyway.

Idyllic, that. Guy Clarke as well. If I was to compile a list of music I’d want to share with my son around the campfire, he’d have to be there. Him and Bobby Charles, for sure.

Hey Bock, I’ve tried to make them listen to Neil but they persist with the unce, unce, unce thing. I think of music as a generational statement, and that makes the unce, unce, unce thing OK, well OK with me anyway. I’ve stopped trying to like the high pitched modulated voices and could never move the way my kids move. ( never a great mover anyway ). Went to that Leonard Cohen movie as well last Sunday, she wouldn’t come cause we had a blazin row beforehand, her loss. Stripped bare and intimidating honesty, he’s some man. I felt like clapping after each song. Thought Anthony’s song was immense and that the Wainrights, particularly Rufus, were beautiful. It’s easy to see where they got their talent when you heard their mom and aunt singing. Paul Hewson is what he is, leopard and spots and all. I don’t know enough about Leonard to see him being embarrassed at the end, but it was the first time I heard the Tower of Song and I loved it anyway. Thought Dave Evans cupla focal were OK too . Great film, great gig, good thing to do in Frank McCourt’s Limerick of a Sunday night.

Money can’t buy moments like that

Sniffle and cry, unfortunately you can’t force music onto your children, they’ll just imediately reject it and toss it back in your face like old shoes. The trick seems to be to drop tracks strategically and occasionaly they’ll perk their ears when they hear a note they like and say ‘Whassat?” “Why, that’s Crosby, Stills and Nash. there’s some cd’s over there if your interested, but you probably wouldn’t like them…” Fool them into thinking that they’re discovering all this stuff for themselves, when actually you’ve been sneakily beating it into them for years… Tis exactly what Wrinkly Joe Snr did to me. Worked a treat… I still like unce-unce-unce though… That’s definately a generational thing…

Top stuff Bock, it’s squishy moments like that that keep us all ticking over. Priceless…

Maz: No nursing home for me. I’ll drink their inheritance instead.

Liam: Yeah. Guy was one of the important ones. Along with John Prine and Lenny and Neil Young, and CSN&B and Bowie. Oh and Tom Waits. And Emmylou. And the Stones. And the Clash. And Elvis Costello. Shit, I feel a post coming on.

    Mikey: Neil good.

S&C: Yeah. I tried to force them as well but then they grew stronger than me so I had to buy a Taser, but then they bought one of their own.

Then I discovered drip-feeding and getting them drunk.

Ellie: True. Money can’t, but drugs might.

    WJJr: Howya?

Unce-Unce-Unce in this town equals Tinker, I’m afraid.
